Point Horror: The Cheerleader (Caroline B. Cooney)

Image
Althea was once a popular girl with friends, a great skier, and an award winning horseback rider. When she got to high school through, everyone went their separate ways. Despite having a dance and athletic background, she lost a spot on the cheerleading squad to a freshman, Celeste. The ancient evil who lives inside her home offers her a deal: bring him Celeste and he'll make Althea popular. See, Althea's house has a turret with shutters on the inside and outside of each window. A vampire lives inside that room, and despite being told multiple times not to go inside, she did and met the creature that would change her life. He promises that Celeste will just get tired and that she'll actually be back to school the day after “it” happens. Still not sure what to do, she decides to ingratiate herself into Celeste's life. Althea suddenly goes to practice and goes out of her way to be friends with the younger girl. At every turn though, she gets shot down. Ce...

Point Thriller: The Perfume (Caroline B. Cooney)

Image
Dove, Luce, and Connie are best friends arguing over the new perfume Venom. The manufacturer only ran one ad that informed people it was available from Dry Ice, which is some random trendy store that sounds like Hot Topic. Since Dove is incredibly shy and quiet, they think it's ridiculous that she would even think about buying a bottle. She still checks under her bed before going to sleep and worries about everything in the world. When they get to the store, she instantly worries about the perfume. She picks up a lingering underlying scent in the store and feels uncomfortable. Her friends open the bottle, which by the way looks like an ancient snake and not the bottle on the cover, and they don't like the smell. It appeals to Dove though, and while her friends think she's crazy, she decides to buy a bottle. Connie and Luce drop her off at home, which turns out to be some mass produced condominium complex. She keeps thinking about the perfume to the point whe...

Point Horror: Twins (Caroline B. Cooney)

Mary Lee and Madrigal are twin sisters and best friends, up to the point when their parents decide to send Mary Lee (ML from here on out) to a private boarding school. ML expects her sister to stick up for her and refuse the separation, but Madrigal thinks it’s a good idea. ML feels all crappy because she thinks her parents hate her, but goes anyway. She hates the school and withdraws from everyone, to the point where her roommates and classmates start ignoring her and think she’s weird. She goes home and learns that her twin now has her own life, including a boyfriend. She doesn’t want him to see her at all because she wants him to think of her as unique. Then Madrigal comes for a visit and wows all of her classmates, who think she’s so cool. They all go skiing and she loans ML her own cool ski outfit. The lift breaks and Madrigal falls to her death, but because of her clothes, everyone thinks it was ML. She tries to tell everyone who she really is, but they think she’s in shock. When...

FREEZE TAG BY CAROLINE B. COONEY (1992)

Image
Meghan loves playing with the family next door. There’s West, Tuesday and Brown and their parents who always buy kid friendly foods and don’t mind people spending the night. They’re all hanging out one day when Lannie from across the street comes over. None of the kids like Lannie because she’s weird, has dull looking hair and is really pale. They’re all kind of bitchy to her, like West won’t take her for a ride on the lawn mower and Tuesday won’t let her spend the night. Lannie makes the kids play freeze tag and they discover that she can actually freeze people, which she does to all of them. When she lets West out, he demands that she unfreeze the others, including Meghan who Lannie really hates. She does, but makes him promise that he’ll always like her “best”. Freeze Tag then cuts to the future when the kids are teenagers in high school. Meghan and West are now one of those couples that you despise because they’re so cute. They’re constantly giggling together, talking on the phone ...
