Point Thriller The Girlfriend by R.L. Stine

Image
Ah poor stupid Scotty. Scotty is that guy we all hate, but secretly love in high school. He’s captain of the football team, smart and dates cheerleader Laura. Everyone thinks they’re the perfect couple and they have their whole life mapped out. They’ll go to college, get married, Scotty will become an architect who works for her dad’s firm and everyone will live happily ever after. Her dad throws them a huge party to congratulate them on getting into the same college. He takes Scotty off to the side to tell him that he wants the teenage boy (with absolutely no) training to work for him the next summer in his architecture firm. Laura’s family is about to head off to Paris for vacation and she’ll *gasp* miss the Homecoming dance and they’re king and queen! She jokingly tells him that he should take another girl to the dance and he laughs it off. After the big game and the big bonfire (boring), Scotty decides to skip the dance and…Wait, they have the dance right after the game? What kind ...

Prom Dress was the very first Point book I ever read or bought and I still have my original copy. It’s still stamped inside, saying I bought it from the book fair on March 4, 1990. I re-read it recently and I could swear there was a segment with a girl who was a singer and got hurt, but that must be another book. I even remembered her singing while sitting in the drive through lane, so maybe I’m losing my mind. All right so Prom Dress starts with Robin who’s like the perfect girl. She’s a dancer, has a great looking and rich boyfriend Tyler, loves her sister Gabby and has the best life ever! Except that she has to work for old Miss Catherine, who has a terrible scar running down the side of her face. The family doesn’t have much money and Robin’s freaking out over getting a dress for the dance club (team?)’s performance of the Charleston, plus trying to afford a prom dress. Because you know, Tyler won’t like her if she can’t afford a dress. She needs to watch that episode of Saved by t...

Sweet Valley High #4: Power Play

Image
What a horrid little book! So Robin Wilson starts off the book as the fat girl with the “pretty face” as they keep reminding us. Liz is wandering around the house when Jessica calls and gives her the old library excuse for why she can’t help clean the house. Then (shocker) Robin shows up with Jess’s stuff and her library books. She asks Liz about Pi Beta Alpha and mentions that she’s worried Jess won’t put up her name at nominations so Liz agrees to do it. Then we’re reminded for the 97th time that it’s not really Liz’s scene. We’re also treated to Liz’s perspective on Robin stuffing her face with a chocolate bar and watching it quickly disappear. Jess comes home with a new scarf and says that Lila’s aunt sent it to her from New York, but it isn’t her style. The twins fight over Robin, with Jess maintaining that she won’t fit in because of her weight. She then tries to trick Liz by closing the nomination meeting early, but Liz shows up just in time and tells the girls that Robin’s one ...

LJ Smith Goes Hollywood

I stumbled across an online article today with the news that author L.J. Smith is getting the small screen treatment. Her series The Vampire Diaries is being turned into a television series for The CW. Of course the only reason it’s happening is because of the fan base spawned by Twilight. It will be awhile before another movies comes out, so we have to get those fans something else! Quick! Like a bunny! Honestly it’s kind of irritating to me. The article mentioned how the books were about a girl caught between two brothers who were both vampires, but I remember it being a lot more intense and deeper than that. Smith managed to finish off The Vampire Diaries in three books (though she did write a later fourth book, which is super hard to find apparently). How the heck are they going to stretch that into an entire season worth of television episodes. Oh yeah and Kevin Williamson was hired as the writer. Great, Mr. Dawson’s Creek himself is going to turn the books into a TV show. I can’t...

Sweet Valley University #21: For the Love of Ryan

Image
For the Love of Ryan is one of those Sweet Valley University books that takes part in a standalone series of a few books. Sure they mention the same “gang”, but the new characters are quickly forgotten. The gang from Sweet Valley University decide to head to the Sweet Valley Shore for the summer, which begs the question…seriously, how fucking big in this town? Plus the beach is closed for the first week or so because it hasn’t opened for the season. Uh, don’t the twins swim constantly in Sweet Valley? Oh that’s right, this must be 14 hours across town. Elizabeth and Jessica head north with Winston and good old Liz can’t help but notice how great and put together Jess looks after the long trip. Jess immediately starts scoping the new guys on the beach while Liz gets comfy with her buddy from college Nina. Apparently they all put down a deposit on a summer house without even knowing if they’d make the lifeguard squad! I hate those twins and their “everything will work out” mentality. On ...

FREEZE TAG BY CAROLINE B. COONEY (1992)

Image
Meghan loves playing with the family next door. There’s West, Tuesday and Brown and their parents who always buy kid friendly foods and don’t mind people spending the night. They’re all hanging out one day when Lannie from across the street comes over. None of the kids like Lannie because she’s weird, has dull looking hair and is really pale. They’re all kind of bitchy to her, like West won’t take her for a ride on the lawn mower and Tuesday won’t let her spend the night. Lannie makes the kids play freeze tag and they discover that she can actually freeze people, which she does to all of them. When she lets West out, he demands that she unfreeze the others, including Meghan who Lannie really hates. She does, but makes him promise that he’ll always like her “best”. Freeze Tag then cuts to the future when the kids are teenagers in high school. Meghan and West are now one of those couples that you despise because they’re so cute. They’re constantly giggling together, talking on the phone ...

First Post; Yay!

I thought I’d just start things off by telling you a little bit about myself. I’m 28 years old, never married and no kids. Last year I stumbled across some old Christopher Pike books and set about trying to recapture my youth. I’ve been scouring yard sales, flea markets, thrift stores, used book stores and (of course) eBay to try and locate some of the books I read as a pre-teen. I’m planning on reading and reviewing at least one of these books every week until I run out. *Sweet Valley High *Sweet Valley University *Christopher Pike *Fear Street *Point Thrillers Basically they’re all the books I read when I was growing up, though to be honest I kept reading Pike and Fear Street after I was outside the target range. If you’re reading this, I hope you check back soon for my first review!
