The Nancy Drew Files #109: Love Notes (1995)

Image
Nancy and Bess are off on the most exciting vacation ever. Nah, I'm just messing with you. They're actually staying with a friend of Carson, Nancy's dad, and going to a music festival. Not something cool like Woodstock, but a symphony festival with a pianist competition. Thrills and chills, right? The day after arriving, they decide that horseback riding seems fun and stop by the first stable they see. Conveniently, it's also Keiko and Ted, two of the three remaining competitors are riding. They meet up, Ted instantly falls for Ms. Drew, and they decide to go riding together. While away from the pack, they hear a scream and rush to find Keiko laying on the ground and holding her arm. She tells them that she accidentally fell off her horse, and Ted agrees to rush and find a doctor. The doctor says she sprained her wrist but needs medical attention, so Ted takes her into town. Nancy find proof that someone placed burrs under the saddle to aggravate the ho...

The Nancy Drew Files #5: Hit and Run Holiday (1986)

Nancy, George, and Bess are off to Fort Lauderdale for spring break. Bess can't wait to hit the beach and check out the hot guys, but Nancy promised her friend Kim's mom that she would check on the girl. Kim was supposed to come home the week before but called at the last minute to say she wanted to stay an extra week. And the hotel actually had a room for her during the busiest time of the year? Bess and George immediately head to the beach, while Nancy goes to Kim's room. She hears her talking to someone on the phone in a panic and agreeing to meet them right away. Kim rushes out of her room, sees Nancy, and agrees to talk to her later, much later before rushing off. Nancy runs to follow her, loses her sandal, and when she catches up, she sees a car come out of nowhere and hit Kim head on. Though there were lots of people around, everyone swears they saw nothing. The cops who arrive say it's because most of them are illegal aliens and too afraid to co...

Nancy Drew on Campus #13: Campus Exposures

Image
Man, after reading this book, I have no clue why I thought they were so good as a teenager. Nancy is running around campus when she sees Ned, which completely shocks her. See, this is the series where they decided to break up Ned and Nancy, so she has no idea why he's on her campus. Turns out that it's just some guy named Terry who looks a whole lot like Ned. He's the head of the film society on campus, and after she goes to a screening they host, he invites her to come back for a screening of the cult film Road to Nowhere . The son of the lead actress, one of the actors, and the DP will all be there too. The thing I strongly dislike about this book is that there are like 900 characters all with their own stories. George is now dating some guy named Will, and everyone thinks they are perfect together. She starts getting sick of him and worrying that they seem like an old married couple, even though they've only dated for a few months. Stephanie is a...

Nancy and Bess head off to Halloway College for winter break to investigate the disappearance of a girl named Ava Woods. Now, it's not like they actually know each other or anything, but Carson Drew apparently knows her parents and suggested his daughter could find out what happened. She disappeared after meeting a blind date on Friday night, and the girls arrive on Sunday to meet with the dean. The dean lets them know that they are in luck. Even though it's winter break, the school offers a special elective program that is open to students and people from off-campus that lets them take a class on campus. As the school obviously has a lack of money, there are even dorm rooms open for those new students! Nancy heads off to the dorm, while Bess signs them up for classes. She quickly meets Ava's roommate Betsy, who has no clue what happened to her. She does remember that someone called for Ava and mumbled something about a box before hanging up. Nancy also mee...

Sweet Valley Twins #6: The New Girl

Image
Not sure why I never recapped this one, but here goes! Brooke Dennis just moved to Sweet Valley, and she is such a bitch that it makes me hate a sixth grade girl! She ran into Jessica when she was walking Mrs. Brambles' dog Sally and tried to kick the poor old dog. Naturally, Jessica is less than happy when Alice announces that Mr. Dennis is her new client and that he and his daughter are coming over for dessert. Jessica feigns a stomachache and runs off, leaving Elizabeth to fend for herself. Mr. Dennis seems pretty nice and mentions how Brooke barely ate at dinner. She literally turns up her nose every time someone tries to talk to her and refuses to eat dessert. When Liz suggests they listen to the new Johnny Buck tape, Brooke laughingly grimaces and says she only listens to classical music. She then bitches about their house, the school she hasn't seen yet, and pretty much everyone in town. Elizabeth admits to Jessica that she was write and that the ...

Ghosts of Fear Street #18: Camp Fear Ghouls (R.L. Stine)

The Waynesbridge Scouts are like totally the coolest group of girls around. That's why Lizzy and her best friend Caroline are so worried when they hear that the invitations just went out. While Caroline finds one of the tell tale pink envelopes in her locker, Lizzy doesn't get one. Arden, the daughter of the troop leader, hates her for not inviting her to her birthday party and set it up so she wouldn't get in. Lizzy tries to play it off like it's no big deal, but the two girls fight when Caroline decides to join anyway. While on the way home, Lizzy sees a dark figure hiding behind a tree in her yard. The figure is actually Amy, one of the Camp Fear Girls, who wants her to join their troop. Lizzy finds an invitation waiting for her at home. A note on the bottom warns her to be there or beware and appears out of nowhere. A bus comes to pick her up the next day, but the driver never stops for anyone else and takes her right to Fear Street. The woman then ...

Ghosts of Fear Street #20: Spell of the Screaming Jokers (R.L. Stine)

Image
Brittany is Kristy from the BSC, while her best friend Louisa is like Stacey or Claudia. Louisa cares about fashion, hair, and makeup, and she wants her best friend to look better, which is why she keeps trying to “fix” her hair. Brittany is extremely unhappy because their principal volunteered them to go visit some new kid Max who is too sick to come to school but new in town. He picked them because he caught them petting a rat in the band room. Even though this kid Frankie brought the rat to school, they got in trouble too. Her little brother Jimmy then runs in and does a card trick, which is his favorite thing in the world. Brittany, Louisa, and Frankie head over to Max's house, which is on Fear Street. Frankie suggests they cut through the yard of Mrs. Marder, an older woman everyone calls Mrs. Murder. Brittany tells them that she cursed a girl named Gina. Gina went in her yard and was never seen again. The older lady also has a ton of black cats hanging around. ...
