Quick note, this is book #1 in the “Passport to Romance” series. Too bad I don't have any of the others! Since it's probably been a whole book since the gals left the country, they head off to Switzerland. Almost as soon as they land, they meet the handsome Franz Haussman who Bess develops a crush on and who offers to take them to their hotel. They also meet some random Australian named Mick. He seems annoyed that they already met another guy and offers to show them around town. Mick takes them to a watch museum and a few other sites in town. Nancy notices Franz's picture on the cover of the newspaper. It turns out that he's the son of the country's most famous watch company owner and incredibly rich. The picture shows this guy Yves punching him in the face. Mick acts all jealous of the guy and takes them on an even longer tour. Tricia Martin has been acting a little strange lately, pulling away and acting distant around Steven. When he comes home one weekend, she won't come to the phone and seems like she's never home. Jessica points out that she might be taking him for granted because he's always around. She even drops hints that maybe Tricia is seeing someone else. Deciding to prove once and for all that their love is eternal and that Tricia would never ever cheat on him, he goes to her house. Her dad says that she's not home then that she is home but doesn't want to see him. Steve breaks through the door, rushes into her room, and finds her packing a bag. After a fight in which she tells him that she's unexpectedly going out of town, she tells him that maybe they're too serious about her. So, Kristy is hanging out at home and enjoying the sunshine watching Nannie and Watson work in the garden when Shannon and Abby stop by. Abby is still complaining about that time she bought a copy of the test and did not get expelled from school and how the guy who sold it to her is a jerk. There's also a brief mention of someone named Troy Parker. He was recently suspended but no one knows why. Kristy goes back to school and thinks about how much she hates Cary Retlin. Carson's sister Eloise invited the girls to stay with her and check out a big charity fashion show. As soon as they arrive though, she reveals that fashion model Jacqueline Henri disappeared. She was set to be the big star of the show. Luckily, Eloise already volunteered Nancy to take her spot. They rush over to the show, and see Jacqueline herself on the street before the woman rushes away. They also meet Mr. Reese, the famous fashion designer who donated some of his clothing. He immediately moans and whines that someone stole some of his designs. After throwing a fit and firing his assistant, he takes one look at Nancy and decides that she'll do for the show. When she walks out in the first outfit though, he throws another fit and pulls her off stage. He shows her the Millington catalog, which is a retail company that sells knock off designer fashions. Janet Howell is a real piece of work. As she gets ready to graduate eighth grade and move onto high school, all she can think about is herself and her big graduation party. She assigns Jessica to write her speech, since the principal apparently couldn't find anyone better to speak. Hannah wakes up after having a nightmare that her room is on fire. So grateful that it was just a dream, she's actually nice to her younger twin brothers and helps her mom clean the kitchen. Later, she goes outside and meets a new kid named Danny. He tells her he moved into the house next door, which she thinks is weird because the house has been empty for so long. He thinks it's weird that she lives in her own house for some unexplained reason. Well, I know the reason because I watched the Goosebumps movie not too long ago! Her parents didn't have the money to send her to camp this year, so she writes a passive aggressive letter to her best friend at camp and then tries to find ways to keep herself busy. Carson is off to San Francisco for some rich white man legal convention and decides to take Nancy and George along for the ride, though he does let them stay by themselves in a completely different hotel. While wandering through the park, they see a woman in fuchsia, who looks nothing at all like the woman from the cover, drawing in a sketchbook. A few minutes later, they hear the woman scream, run back to help her, and see a guy running away with her purse. Nancy and George call the cops and go to the hospital to see her. Officer Hayes, the man in charge, doesn't really seem to believe that Nancy can do anything, but he does agree to let them see the woman. She wakes up with no memories of her life, which leads to the hospital and cops classifying her as a Jane Doe. Lieutenant Antonio, who worked with Nancy before, shows up, acts super grumpy, and actually snaps at her for not giving a better description of the mugger.
