The Babysitters Club Mysteries #Dawn Schafer, Undercover Baby-sitter

Image
Dawn is still in Stoneybrook but getting ready for summer to end and to head back to California. While at a BSC meeting, they get a call from a Mrs. Cornell who needs a sitter. They then get a call from a Mrs. Keats for a sitter. Both women ask for a different sitter but have the same address. Kristy and Dawn get the jobs. The two head to Livingston Place, which is a Mansion that makes Watson's house look like my house. They meet John, the Butler, and then the two clients. Each woman leads one of the girls to a separate wing. Dawn notices a super ugly portrait of a man on the wall. John tells her that it was Mr. Livingston and that they're are more like it around the house. Richard comes to pick Dawn up, and she finds him outside with Mrs. Iorio, a fellow lawyer. She explains that she's the executor of the estate. Apparently, Mr. Livingston was quite the asshole in real life. He pitted his kids against each other all the time. When he died, his will left the...

The Babysitters Club Mysteries #34: Mary Anne and the Haunted Bookstore

Image
Thanks to some random English assignment, Mary Anne keeps reading Poe stuff while home alone. That naturally makes her think about and miss Dawn. During the net BSC meeting, she takes a call from Mr. Cates, a new client who is conveniently opening Poe & Co., a bookstore in a historic mansion. Kristy kindly gives her the job. See, Stoneybrook was apparently home to Benson Dalton Gable. Not only was he a compatriot of Poe's, but there are rumors that Poe maybe stole ideas from him or even killed him. She meets Tom and Gillian, the two kids of the bookstore owner. They hate living in the old mansion, hate that it keeps raining, and hate that their mom isn't there. They also really dislike Ms. Spark, the bookstore designer (is that even a real job?), but that might be because she and their dad have a clear spark. Mary Anne also meets Professor Kingslover, an English professor from the local college who has an unhealthy obsession with Poe and Alex Gable. His dad...

The Babysitters Club Mysteries #10: Stacey and the Mystery Money

Image
Stacey can't stop thinking about Terry Hoyt, the new guy in school. He has gorgeous eyes, seems really nice, and is cute, so of course she thinks he's perfect for her. Claudia asks about how things are going with Sam – remember him? - and Stacey says that they recently decided to date other people while still seeing each other. Mrs. Hoyt calls in at their next meeting to hire a sitter, but Kristy has to take the job since Stacey already has one. She does learn that he has a twin sister though. The girls also talk about a counterfeiting ring making its way around Stoneybrook. That becomes important when Stacey takes Charlotte on a trip downtown while sitting for her that weekend. After getting lunch, stopping by to see her mom at the department store, and picking out some random stuff, Stacey buys a headband, hands over a 20, and gets a 10 back in change. When she goes to buy earrings later though, it turns out that the 10 is counterfeit. When the cops come to i...

The Babysitters Club Mysteries #25: Kristy and the Middle School Vandal

Image
So, Kristy is hanging out at home and enjoying the sunshine watching Nannie and Watson work in the garden when Shannon and Abby stop by. Abby is still complaining about that time she bought a copy of the test and did not get expelled from school and how the guy who sold it to her is a jerk. There's also a brief mention of someone named Troy Parker. He was recently suspended but no one knows why. Kristy goes back to school and thinks about how much she hates Cary Retlin. He possibly – she has no proof – stole her math homework, changed all the answers, and put it back in her bag. He also manages to get her watch right off her wrist. After the two fight, he offers her a deal. If the BSC can solve a mystery of his choosing, he'll give her back the watch and leave her alone too. Since Kristy thinks she can do anything, she agrees without even talking to the club members first. Cary leads them on a treasure hunt that starts with the clue: Get Your Mother (understand...

The Babysitters Club Mysteries #28: Abby and the Mystery Baby

Image
Since it's winter and Abby wants to stay in shape, she decides to jog home instead of taking the bus. She arrives home to find a bundle on the front porch that is actually a baby! He's wrapped in a little blanket and has a diaper bag but nothing else. Not sure what to do, she calls Kristy who immediately comes over with her grandmother. Her mom gets home in time to see everything and freak out a little. Kristy called the police, and since they only have three officers on the force, Sergeant Johnson shows up. Abby's mom flips out a little when she sees the blanket wrapped around the baby and sneaks off to talk with him. After he speaks to Abby and everyone else, he decides to just let them keep the baby until they can find his mother. Abby decides to start calling him Eli. Abby's mom clearly knows something is up. She takes a bunch of time off work, keeps acting really sneaky, and even glosses over the whole thing when her parents call. Abby investigates...

The Baby-Sitters Club Mystery #18: Stacey and the Mystery at the Empty House

Image
The Johanssens are heading off on a vacation to France. Even though they set the lights on a timer and did some other stuff, they still need someone to take in the mail/paper, make the house look lived in, and take care of Carrot. Since this is a job clearly meant for a responsible person, they decide to hire Stacey. To make things even better, she's not really an animal person. Things go pretty well at first. Carrot seems super excited to see her, and even even likes being around him. Then, things get weird. She starts noticing strange things in the house. Carrot goes bonkers and chews up a bunch of paper, and the dog winds up destroying some other stuff in the house too. She also finds weird things like a glass that she swore she put away in the sink and a broken vase. Stacey later stops by and sees a strange woman in the bushes with bright red hair. The woman says she's the meter reader and that her husband checks electrical meters too. Stacey slips up and l...

The Babysitters Club Mysteries #15: Kristy and the Vampires

Image
There's some television movie called Little Vampires shooting in Stoneybrook, so you know that means Derek is coming back to town. He actually isn't the star this time, but that doesn't mean he isn't super popular. The Masters call to hire a sitter to stick with him on set, and Kristy is available. They also hire Claudia to watch over Todd since he has a small role in the movie. It turns out that Derek shot up a few inches since the last time he was in town and isn't sure how to use his new body. He keeps tripping over his feet and drops a very expensive Tiffany lamp that shatters. Kristy later finds a threatening note in his trailer, someone switches breakaway glass with real glass for a stunt he had planned, and someone sets up his stunt double to fall really bad. Kristy and the BSC quickly put together a list of suspects. Carson Fraser: Carson is the star of some super popular surfing television show, but Kristy thinks he's conceited an...

The Baby-Sitters Club Mystery #17: Dawn and the Halloween Mystery

Image
Even though Dawn spent something like six Halloween seasons in Stoneybrook before moving to California for "six" months, she's in California for Halloween. While out shopping with Carol, she stops to buy some mousse and arrives back at the car before Carol. Dawn also swings by Ellie's Variety Shop to get paint for Jeff's monster costume. Ellie chides her about now dressing up for Halloween, but Dawn says she's too old for that kind of thing. She hears someone scream and sees a guy in High-Fly sneakers and a clown mask go running by. Turns out he just robbed the convenience store, so she has to go to the police station as a witness. Even though there was just robbery, the town imposes a curfew for all kids and decides that if anything else happens, the town will cancel Halloween. The We Luv Kids Club decides to plan a backup Halloween party for the kids. Dawn also goes to sit for Ryan and Erick. I swear that I do not remember the writer spellin...
