Nancy Drew Case Files #36: Over the Edge (1989)

Image
Nancy, Bess, and George are once again heading off on vacation. This time, it's Club High Adventure, some random ranch type place where they have a bunch of random activities. Marva, the woman who owns the place, asked Nancy for help when she began getting a series of suspicious letters and things start going wrong. Literally the day they get there, they witness a hang-gliding accident. Lisa, the guest, comes down hard and smacks her head on the ground. Gil, her instructor, checks her out and claims that she's fine but still calls for an ambulance, though he does take a few minutes to flirt with her. Nancy finds that especially weird when she discovers that he's engaged to Marva. Gil reveals that the hang-glider had a bent rod that looks like someone did it deliberately. Nancy starts her usual investigating and runs into “Uncle Al” who works for the club. He is super gruff like a Scooby Doo villain and tells her to basically mind her own business. She also ove...

The Nancy Drew Files #6: White Water Terror (1986)

Nancy and the gang are all relaxing when George gets the news that she won an all expenses paid whitewater rafting trip for her and three of her closest friends. Bess really doesn't want to go because she assumes she'll die, but they manage to convince her that there might be some hot guys there. Since they have space for one more, Ned comes along. That makes sense because supposedly he and Nancy are having problems...again. The trip includes plane tickets and a rental car. When they get there though, there's no one waiting for them. No one at the rental place has ever heard of them either. They can't get a car until the next morning, which turns out to be a good thing since someone left them directions that took them along a twisty road that was washed away. They almost die but get stopped in time. When they finally get to the river, a few people seem surprised to see them. Namely Paula, the person who sent the letter, and Max, her right hand man. Max k...

Nancy Drew Case Files #22: Fatal Attraction (1988)

I'm sure I've mentioned Brenda Carlton before in another review. She's a “reporter” for the local paper, which means that her dad owns the paper and lets her write. While on vacation with Bess, George, and Ned, Nancy gets a letter sent via messenger that asks her to meet someone unknown person at an abandoned drive-in theater. She naturally goes and meets Mr. Carlton. He explains to her that Brenda has a brand new boyfriend named Mike who's a guitarist. Mike is extremely shady about his past and doesn't seem like a good guy. They met while she was on vacation, and he then followed her back to River Heights. Mr. Carlton begs Nancy to check him out and make sure that Mike is good for Belinda. This involves going to the club and seeing him play. Brenda gets way too suspicious and actually accuses Nancy of going after him for herself, which causes Nancy to point out that she doesn't need some rando when she has Ned waiting for her. Just as Brenda loose...

Nancy Drew Files Case #16: Never Say Die (October 1987)

George is somehow suddenly so good at cycling that she makes it into the junior championships. Steven, the local owner of a successful software company, volunteers to be her sponsor. He not only pays for her new wind suit and for private lessons, but he also pays to have a new velodrome built just for the competition. Her trainer BTW is her boyfriend Jon who hooked up with her in a book I never read before. George is too scared to ask Steven for anything else, even though she needs a new disk bike. That makes it super awesome when he shows up and presents her with one he just bought. His assistant, Peter, seems way too excited to take it from her and adjust the seat and isn't too happy when Jon does it instead. It takes about an hour for weird things to start happening. First of all, someone knocks the concession stand tent down when George is the only one there and sets it on fire. The list of things done to her includes: -Someone tries to run her down in the middl...

Nancy Drew Case Files #8: Two Points to Murder (1987)

Nancy got a call from Ned's basketball coach that caused her to pack up and rush to Emerson College to investigate a new case. Since she can't do anything alone, Bess and George come along for the ride. George can't wait to hit the college's gym and take in some basketball games, while Bess just wants to check out the hot college guys. Nancy is a little nervous because things aren't great between her and Ned, so she isn't sure what will happen. See, Ned is co-captain of the basketball team, and they're just about to make it to the big playoffs. Someone keeps pulling all these pranks on the team that make it hard for them to concentrate and play. The coach brought in Nancy in the hopes of getting to the bottom of things. As soon as she arrives, she meets Pat, the coach, and Dr. Riggs, the team doctor. She also gets to meet some of the other players who tease her about how much Ned talks about her. The only problem is that Ned seems kind of ...

The Nancy Drew Files #40: Shadow of a Doubt (1989)

Carson takes the whole crew out to a fancy restaurant to celebrate the end of a big case. While getting ready, Nancy answers a call from someone who hangs up after hearing her voice. She tells them that she received multiple calls like that in the past. Carson blows it off but then some random dude shows up with a package. It has a picture of a dude inside with a threatening note on the bottom. It turns out that several years ago, Carson worked on an embezzlement case. He defended this guy Allard who was accused of stealing from the bank he worked for with the help of a partner named Gleason. Carson got Allard off, but Gleason was found guilty and sentenced to hail time. Gleason recently got out, which was right around when someone started threatening Carson. He begs Nancy to stay out of it, which lasts for one whole page. Nancy decides it wouldn't hurt to look into things and calls the chief to get Gleason's new address. She heads over and finds a bunch of cops...

The Nancy Drew Files #43: False Impressions (1990)

I'll be upfront and let you know that this review isn't as long or as good as most. This is what happens when you try to read and watch Crazy Ex-Girlfriend at the same time. Seriously though, how good was the first season of that show? I've seen every season, but the first one is my favorite. Anyway, Nancy is at her house with Bess and George when Ned shows up with two movies to watch. He's home from college on break, and Nancy promised that she would focus on him instead of solving a crime for once. Chief McGinnis shows up on her doorstep though with a lieutenant from the next town over. He's there to arrest Nancy. As it turns out, someone swindled a few people out of their money and gave him the name Nancy Drew. The lieutenant has her to do a line up with some other chicks with reddish blonde hair. Neither victim recognizes her as the Nancy Drew they know, so he lets her go. Mrs. Hackney, the first victim, sees her in the station and claims she...

The Nancy Drew Files #29: Pure Poison (1988)

Nancy and Carson are just chilling at home and sitting down to eat when the phone rings. It's Senator Marilyn Kilpatrick with some big news for Nancy. Apparently, they worked together on a previous case with a tennis player who looked like Nancy's twin. The senator asks her to come to Washington DC as soon as possible and throws around terms like “life and death” and “a matter of utmost importance,” so Nancy thinks she needs to go. After flying to DC and spending the night in a hotel, she finally meets with Marilyn. The senator tells her that Beverly Bishop, the hottest gossip reporter around, wants to do a story on her and plans on putting her secrets in a book. She also has secrets on three other big people who will appear in her book. Her secret is that she used money to get Teresa, the tennis player, out of the foreign country where she lived and that she broke a lot of laws to help her. Bishop is quite the bitch, which we know because she always wears stiletto heels....

The Nancy Drew Case Files #45: Out of Bounds (1995)

Even though Nancy and the gang are out of high school and apparently not bothered with college or anything, Bess is now dating Bill, a player on a local high school football team with a shot at the state championship. Through him, she met Cynthia, the cheerleader girlfriend of the quarterback, Rob. Rob gets sacked pretty hard during the game but gets back up, plays, and scores the winning touchdown. They all head over to Touchdown, this cafe in town, for a celebration. Though Cynthia works there as a waitress, Pete, her manager, fires her when they come in and sit down. He claims that she stole from the register. Nancy agrees to go undercover and find out who really stole the money. Rob passes out and goes to the hospital but checks out against medical advice. Nancy pretends to be his sister and gets the nurse to reveal that he has a liver problem. She tries to con the doctor, but he refuses to tell her anything except that her “brother” really needs to take a break. An...
