Fear Street: Bad Dreams (R.L. Stine)

Image
I’ve had this one for awhile, but couldn’t get around to writing the review until now. Maggie and Andrea are sisters who do nothing but fight. They’re getting ready to move to Fear Street from fancy North Hills, which pisses Andrea off. Actually everything seems to piss her off, mainly because Maggie is the “good” sister, or at least the popular one. They were once pretty well off, but had to move after their mom died. They get to their new house and Andrea lets the dog out. He runs off, almost gets hit and it takes up like three chapters. Maggie goes up to her new room and finds a huge canopy bed in place. The last owners left it behind and Andrea wants it because she claims she wanted one her whole life. Maggie tells her to suck on it because apparently Andrea got to pick the first bedroom and since she chose the best one, Maggie gets the bed. Maggie meets up with her boyfriend Justin and tells him all about her sucky life. She also briefly mentions that he once dated her friend/team...

Fear Street Super Chiller: The New Year’s Party (R.L. Stine)

So the book opens up with a party back in 1965. Beth is all excited because she just got a new pair of white boots, even though they pinch her toes. She starts flirting with this guy Todd who totally wants to make out, but she won’t because there’s people watching. She then gets pissed because some guys are picking on her brother Jeremy and Todd doesn’t really give a shit. Two guys in masks rush in and demand everyone’s wallets and jewelry. When no one moves, one of them grabs Jeremy and holds gun to his head. He pulls the trigger, but it’s actually some fucked up joke played by her best friend Karen, who’s throwing the party. Beth demands to know why she did that to her brother, especially since everyone picks on him anyway. Beth chases Jeremy outside, but he won’t listen because he’s tired of all this crap. Kind of agree with him on that one. He runs off in his car, so she jumps in with him. Jeremy drives like a maniac through the snow and ice and accidentally hits someone. Beth firs...

Fear Street: Halloween Party (R.L. Stine)

Terry and Niki hit the Fear Street Cemetery on Halloween night, but then hear someone screaming. At least Terry hears, but not Niki because she’s deaf, but of course it doesn’t bother her so it shouldn’t bother you, though it will be mentioned 700 other times in the book. She must be related to Regina Morrow. Murphy, an annoying guy from school pops up and pretends to eat their brains. The book then jumps back to the past, when a few students got invitations to a Halloween party. Terry finds his in his locker and Trisha, his good friend, also got one. They have a short talk about the party, which basically consists of (a) the party’s on Fear Street, which is incredibly creepy and (b) it’s being hosted by Justine Cameron, a new girl who no one really knows very well. Terry’s girlfriend Niki also got an invite and everyone at school keeps talking about the party. It turns out that the Cameron mansion where Justine lives, is haunted. Well of course it is, it’s on Fear Street. There was so...

Sweet Valley University #10: No Means No

Image
This book should be titled “How Elizabeth Wakefield Turned Psycho and Jessica Wakefield was Almost Date Raped”. Of course it doesn’t matter what happens to Jess because you know she’ll rebound. It’s almost a good thing that the books tackled the subject, but not the way they did. You just know that after one book, she’ll completely forget it ever happened and Liz will only mention it as part of her “my poor sister has had such a hard year”, along with her two-week mistake of a marriage, as it’s now described in the books. Basically Jess and James Montgomery are now a couple, kind of. They go out all the time, everyone thinks they’re a couple and for the last two books, Jess has made it out like they were a couple. Now though, she worries a little because she thinks that he’s more serious about her than she is about him. They go out and he’s all over her and not listening to what she says, which is red flag #1, but of course she doesn’t pick up on it. Red flag #2 is when her sorority si...

Nightmare Hall #4: The Wish

Alex and her friends all go to Salem University together, but she’s really the main character. There’s also Kiki, the soccer player, twins Julie and Jenny and Bennett, Gabe, Kyle and Marty who are some of the only football players to make the team as freshmen. One night the whole gang goes to Vinnie’s for pizza and Alex notices a wizard fortune telling machine in the back corner. Alex gets freaked out because apparently she saw one when her parents were divorcing, it scared her and she’s never forgotten it. Everyone wants to try it, but she starts shaking and almost wets her pants. Yes, the machine from Big scared the shit out of her. There’s one of these at a store close by and I get a kick out of it, but whatever. The whole gang decides to try the machine anyway. Julie wishes her face wasn’t so ordinary and Jenny wishes she would get more attention than her sister. On the way home from the restaurant, Julie has an accident and slams her face into the steering wheel. She breaks every ...

Sweet Valley University #9: Sorority Scandal

Image
The two big storylines in this book deal with Jess and Liz. The Thetas agree to let Jessica pledge again, but only if she steals a book from Professor Marin. It turns out that Liz is actually working with Marin, but doesn’t get that he’s a total pervert. He keeps making comments about her looks, giving her lingering glances and touching her, but she thinks he’s just friendly. Jessica goes to steal the book, but is intercepted by the campus police force. They got an anonymous tip and were waiting in the office for her. She’s arrested and the Thetas push her away. They agree to keep what happened a secret, but tell her to stay away while they deal with it. Alison Quinn takes over once again and basically tells everyone what to do and the president goes along with it. Alison says that Jessica can’t be seen with anyone from the sorority. Liz goes to Marin and asks him to drop the charges against Jessica, but he refuses. He then makes some inappropriate comments and touches Liz’s hair and c...

Sweet Valley University Thriller Edition: Wanted for Murder

On the one hand, I kind of like this book because it follows the continuity of the series; no more 300 spring break and Christmas events in a single school year. On the other hand, it needs another title, something like “Liz, stop giving your sister everything she wants”. Liz and Jess are driving to Vail to spend the rest of Christmas break with Danny, Isabelle and Tom. Tom keeps getting worried because Liz and Jess are making the drive alone. Billie and Steven were originally part of the group, but Steven got sick so the twins have to drive alone. The others are flying out, which I can’t see Jessica allowing. Liz explains that everything will be fine because they have $500 each to spend on the trip. Um, does anyone else think that is not enough money? Supposedly they’re staying at a fancy hotel, paying for their own equipment and lift tickets, plus gas and hotel rooms on the drive there and back. Plus they’re staying in Vail for a week! Oh well, the twins would probably win the lotter...
