Friends Forever #9: Kristy and the Kidnapper

Image
Kristy and Abby are heading to Washington DC for a debating competition. The two randomly get chosen for the contest after a few debating lessons in English class. Seriously, that's what Kristy tells us. They literally just learned how to debate, and the teacher handpicked some students to go. On the way down, she mentions Melissa (from the Claudia-Philly trip book), who is still as wishy-washy as ever. When Kristy makes a comment about the guys being obnoxious, Melissa goes overboard about how annoying they are, and she can't seem to stand up for herself or form an opinion without seeing how Abby and Kristy feels. Conveniently, she's also their third roommate for the trip. Once they get to DC, Kristy sees a boy in the crowd who looks just like Terry Hoyt. Melissa runs up to a cute guy and announces that it's Lucas, her boyfriend from camp. He's pretty much the only reason she came to DC, and she sticks to him like a barnacle. Lucas introduced his f...

Goosebumps #53: Chicken, Chicken

Image
Crystal and her little brother Cole live on a chicken farm in the small town of Goshen Falls. They constantly get stuck taking care of the chickens, which they hate because chickens are disgusting. There's also this odd woman in town, Vanessa, who everyone thinks is a witch. A bunch of kids try to fill her mailbox with water, and she notices Crystal and Cole before everyone runs away. They're walking around with Cole's friend Anthony one day, and Cole and Anthony are acting like typical annoying kids. They accidentally run into Vanessa, knocking her down and ruining a bunch of her groceries. Anthony apologizes before running away, and she points at the two of them and says, "chicken, chicken." Crystal accidentally slams her hand in the refrigerator door and thinks it was Vanessa. Cole thinks it's so funny that he comes downstairs the next day with red sores all over his face and says that Vanessa did it, but he really just drew on his face with...

Point Thriller – Nightmare Hall #7: Pretty Please (Diane Hoh)

*Disclaimer: It turns out that I already recapped this book, but it's been so long that I completely forgot about it. I did a quick Google search, and my recap came up as the number one hit, but since this recap is much longer, I'm going to go ahead and post it. Jo, her roommate Kelly, friend Nan, and their boyfriends Cal and Reed are the Beautiful People on campus. A local photographer picked the group out at a football game and shot a series of photographs for an ad campaign for a local department store. Everyone loves them, and this girl Missy wants them to come to her party in a fancy mansion. When Jo leaves the group for a little while, she meets Evan, a good looking guy who didn't dress up for the party. The two spend some time talking before Missy rushes in and demands that she and her group pose for a picture, so she can prove that the Beautiful People came to her party. While trying to pose them, a gust of winds moves a candle flame closer to Reed, and hi...

Fear Street: Trapped (R.L. Stine)

Image
I n my high school, if you missed three assignments, you got a lower grade. In Shadyside High, if you miss three assignments, you wind up in Saturday school. It seems like Mr. Savage, the new school principal, decided that detention doesn't work anymore so he implemented Saturday school. Elaine winds up there because she missed turning in three assignments in math class. On hand are the typical bad seeds. Darlene wears rock band shirts and dark eyeliner, while Bo gets in trouble for doing dozens of things every day. Max and Jerry both seem pretty cool, but they do whatever Bo tells them. Savage warns them about acting up and leaves, but Bo hurls a switchblade at him, which hits the bulletin board. Darlene suggests they do something fun after calling Elaine a yuppy. They head to the cafeteria because nothing says fun like stealing food. Jerry takes iced tea, Max takes ice cream sandwiches, Darlene eats chips, and even Elaine takes some chocolate milk before they real...

Sweet Valley High #28: Alone in the Crowd

Image
Remember Lynne Henry? Oh wait, you probably don't remember her given that she only pops up in the last few pages of the book before this one. Well Lynne Henry is kind of a plain Jane, and by plain Jane, I mean a girl with frizzy hair and boring clothes who becomes hot when she puts in some conditioner and wears a cool outfit. Lynne has absolutely zero friends at Sweet Valley High. Lila makes it clear in the first chapter that it's because she doesn't make any attempt to talk to other people and wears ugly clothes. Lynne basically mopes around in the whole book about how no one recognizes her or even talks to her. When Scott Trost calls out her name in the cafeteria, she almost has a panic attack before she realizes that he's calling a sophomore by the same name. One random day, she runs into Guy Chesney on the sidewalk. They have a long talk about their favorite musicians, and they both love the same people including Linda Rondstandt. As soon as he walks...

Sweet Valley High #21: Runaway

Image
In case you ever read Sweet Valley Confidential and wondered who the heck Nicky Shepard was, this is the book for you! Jessica is feeling a little like the bastard stepchild in this book because she thinks that everyone loves Liz and basically tolerates her. Steven is back from school, having taken off the rest of the semester to grieve over Tricia. Since he keeps moping around all of the time, Elizabeth thinks it might be a smart idea to invite him to Cara's big party. She also decides that Jess should do it because it would make more sense. As soon as Jess does it, Steven flips his lid. He rants and raves about having no interest in Cara at all and storms away from the table. Ned goes off on Jessica about being so cruel to her grieving brother, and Liz jumps in to say that it was all her idea. Suddenly, it makes perfect sense and Ned thinks it's a good idea. Jessica leaves and meets Cara at the Dairi Burger, and they run into Nicky Shepard. He's the...

The Baby-Sitters Club #118: Kristy Thomas, Dog Trainer

Image
This book was really easy to read because nothing really happens! It's a normal day in the Brewer-Thomas household, and Kristy lets us know that Watson has a bunch of magazines spread out because he's planning their new garden. He tells her that some of the stuff on the table is about guide dogs because he's considering signing the family up as a puppy trainer. A puppy trainer is someone who takes care of a guide dog when it's a puppy and turns it over later. He warns her that they have to pass some tests first, but naturally, they get a dog. They pick Scout up and get a bunch of information about taking care of her. She has to go to obedience school for awhile, and Kristy, Watson, and Karen all go to the first one with her. Everyone thinks Scout is oh so cute except for one woman at the grocery store. She pitches a fit about how they shouldn't allow dogs in the store, but the manager sides with them because it's a service animal, so the woman st...
