Sweet Valley High #46: Decisions

Image
Remember when Robin Wilson was such a blimp that no one wanted to be around her? Well, now she's a super hot and skinny chick who somehow manages to be the star of the diving team and the co-captain of the cheerleading squad. She recently broke down in front of Jessica because her Aunt Felicia agreed to pay for her college tuition but only if she went to Sarah Lawrence. She applied for early admission and got in but doesn't know if she should go. Jessica makes the mistake of telling Elizabeth the news. Felicia is a super fancy and famous artist who lives in New York and sells paintings for thousands of dollars a pop. She went to Sarah Lawrence and her mother did, so Robin is a legacy. She really isn't sure what she should do, and she doesn't want to tell her boyfriend George about it. Robin does attempt to talk to him about college, but he just tells her that she can apply for loans and scholarships and take classes in LA. After not telling him multiple ...

The Baby-Sitters Club #16: Jessi's Secret Language

Image
Let's go way back in time. It's 1988 according to this book, which means that I was eight years old and just discovering the BSC books and a young girl named Jessi Ramsey just moved to Stoneybrook. In case you didn't know, Jessi is an amazing ballerina, which this book lets us know on page one. By page three, we also know that she's black and a transplant from New Jersey, which is okay because at least in Connecticut, she has her own barre to practice moves in her basement. At the next BSC meeting, a new client named Mrs. Braddock calls in for help. Her son is deaf and she needs a regular sitter willing to learn the language. Mary Anne and Dawn want to keep their schedules free, Claudia has an art class, Kristy lives too far away, and Mallory has to sit for her siblings, so Jessi gets the job. Even though she knows it will be hard, she looks forward to it. Jessi has to go over for a few hours to learn some signs and meet the kids. I sincerely hope that M...

Sweet Valley High #15: Promises

Image
After what was supposedly several months but only feels like a few weeks, Tricia Martin is finally ready to die. Since her family sucks totally and completely, only the Wakefield clan is on hand to bid her goodbye. Jessica tells her to "take care" because she doesn't know what to say to a dying person, and Tricia makes a big deal out of how Steve is one of the good ones and how his parents raised him right. Wonder if she would feel the same way after learning how fast he moved on. When the rest of the family leaves, Tricia makes Steve promise that he'll look after her sister Betsy. Betsy is just super troubled and has a good heart, but she doesn't show it very often. After he agrees, she pretty much dies. Cue Betsy running into the hospital, screaming, crying, and drunk off her ass. She manages to sober up when Ned decides that she should come home with them for a bit. Since Steve feels some weird sense of obligation, he goes out of his way to do wha...

Point Thriller: Teacher's Pet (Richie Tankersley Cusick)

Image
Kate wrote a super scary story that won some random award at her school. Her teacher is a part-time writer who thinks Kate has talent and takes her to a writing conference. Though she looks forward to taking classes under famous horror author William Drewe, she's nervous about what he'll say about her writing. They get off the train and wait around forever until this creepy guy named Pearce pops up and takes them to the conference. He warns Kate not to get too excited about William as he hasn't showed up for classes yet and misses a lot of classes because of his drinking. Not long after arriving, she meets Denzil. He teases her about having cabin 13, which is the furthest one back in the woods, hits on her a few times, and makes it clear that he's interested in her before introducing her to his friend Tawney. They both work in the cafeteria to pay for their classes. They see the conference cat, Pet, show up with wet whiskers. Everyone acts like it's some ...

The Babysitters Club Mystery #36: Kristy and the Cat Burglar

Image
This is so random, but I literally forgot that I had this book! We were going through our garage last weekend and found a few boxes/bags of stuff that were in my old car and got transferred into my dad's car, which I borrowed while mine was in the shop. When I ended up driving a completely different car (no saving my old baby LOL), the boxes/bags got moved around a few times. It actually had a sticker from the thrift store on it that shows I bought it in 2012 along with some glasses, a Care Bear, and some other books, including a Fear Street book and a Sweet Valley University book. So it's a lazy day in Stoneybrook. Kristy is sitting for Karen and David Michael and both are bored out of their minds. They suggest that they investigate that creepy/cool old house in the woods. Kristy isn't too keen on the idea, but she really does want to check things out too. Right after they start up the driveway, they hear what sounds like a gunshot. Sergeant Johnson pops up, ask...

Ghosts of Fear Street #9: Revenge of the Shadow People

Image
Vinny's best friend Bobby loves to tell him stories about Shadyside and the things that he sees from his house on Fear Street. His other friend Sharon doesn't really believe anything Bobby says and thinks that he makes it all up for attention. They go to his house, where his parents pretty much ignore him in favor of his new little brother Joey. Joey uses baby talk to ask for a shadow, and even though he has homework, his parents make him stop and do some shadow people for his brother. He makes the shadow of a donkey, but when he points his hands back in his pocket, the donkey stays on the wall. Sharon convinces him that it's probably just the shadow of something else in the room. They tell his parents what happened, but when they go back to his room, the shadow is gone. Vinny later sees a similar shadow on his ceiling, and he tries to pretend that it isn't there. After he and Sharon win an award at school, they have to get their pictures taken. He reali...

Point Thriller: The Babysitter IV (R.L. Stine)

Jenny is out of the hospital yet again with no mention of the time that she went crazy and pretended that she was Mr. Hagen. She's now in therapy with Dr. Morton and telling him about the dreams that she still has. She also moved to a new house with her mom who has a new boyfriend named Winston. After her latest session, she heads to the mall with her best friend Claire and her friend's new boyfriend Rick. She runs into Cal and reveals that they're still seeing each other. He apparently stood by her side and wrote her letters when she was in a mental hospital. A few days later, she plans to sit outside, read a book, and relax, but she meets her new neighbor. Mrs. Warsaw is a single mother with three kids: Meredith and twins Seth and Sean. The two twins conveniently look like just like a little white-haired boy she saw outside in the middle of the night. She asks Jenny to watch her kids for a few minutes while she runs to the store, and she reluctantly agrees...
