Sweet Valley Twins #87: The Mother-Daughter Switch

Image
Jessica has an unfortunate experience with their neighbor Mrs. Wolsky. The woman is driving down the road while Jessica is roller blading. When the neighbor makes a turn into her driveway, Jess loses her balance and falls down. Mrs. Wolsky climbs out of her car, takes one look at her, and snaps at her about how she needs to be more responsible and pay attention to stuff. When Jessica gets home, Steven reminds her and Elizabeth that their friends are coming cover. Apparently, they and Alice decided to have a party for Mother's Day for all the twins' friends and their moms. Both girls forgot to pick up the stuff they were supposed to, but they assume Alice took care of everything. When Alice gets home, it turns out that she forgot too. She's been so busy designing a sun porch for Mrs. Wolsky that she barely remembers her own name. She snaps at the girls about how she can't trust them to do anything and they'll have to just make the best of it. Since t...

Point Thriller: Camp Fear (Carol Ellis)

Image
Woo-who! I just located a box of books from my last move. Let's pretend it wasn't three years ago, shall we? While many were books already covered here on the blog, there were a few hidden gems in there like this one. Believe it or not, I have probably had this for at least four years and never got around to recapping it :) Prologue: A group of counselors are out in the woods gathering branches and down wood to make a fire. They're all laughing and having fun, even though it rained the night before. Look, I just took a trip to the Moonville Tunnel a few weeks ago (Google it if you like haunted places!), and hiking through muddy woods is anything but fun. Anywho, one of the counselors slips and falls in the mud, warned you buddy, and suddenly starts screaming. Everyone looks and sees a dead body wearing a Camp Silverlake shirt. Seven Years Later. First, we get an italicized couple of paragraphs from someone warning that he remembered what happened...

Ghosts of Fear Street #6: Eye of the Fortuneteller

Image
Kelsey lives on Fear Street, which means that nothing scares her. Her cousin and best friend Drew, who is just a few weeks younger than her, is pretty much scared of everything. Their parents rent a house every year and they go to the boardwalk, but Drew is usually too scared to go on any rides. This year, she convinced him to go on the biggest roller coaster. On the way back to their house, they find a mysterious fortune teller shack. Madame Valda calls them by name and invites them inside. When she mentions Drew's last name, Kelsey sees that he has his name on his beach pass and giggles. She points it out to them and they get a kick out of it. Madame Valda gets pissed off and sends them away with a warning that they will soon know that her powers are real. When they run off, she attacks them, grabbing Kelsey's arm and staring her down. They finally escape, but they get lost. They see a weird dog following them, and when it pins them in a corner, the dog sudden...

Sweet Valley Twins #10: One of the Gang

Jessica is super excited because she was named the chairman of the Mini Olympics, which is some random athletic event at SVMS. Elizabeth recently became besties with Pamela Jacobson, who has some random heart condition that keeps her from participating in competitions or even gym class. She previously attended a school in the area just for handicapped, disabled and ill students. Her parents agreed to let her come to SVMS for one year, but if things don't go well, she has to return to her old school. Steven decides that he needs to bug his sisters even more than usual, so he pretends that he's psychic. He constantly pops up to tell them about his premonitions. They try complaining to their mom, but she tells them to ignore him and he'll eventually get tired of it. Jessica decides to mess with him a little. When he says he had a feeling that she was in danger, she tells him that at the same time, she almost got seriously hurt with a volleyball to the head. Whe...

Fear Street Super Chiller: Broken Hearts (R.L. Stine)

Image
Prologue: September Josie and Rachel are twin sisters who look and act nothing alike. They and their best friend Melissa go horseback riding with their little sister Erica who is about to be a freshman at Shadyside High with them. Erica chickens out at the last minute and refuses to go riding. Rachel is fine with it, but Josie keeps snapping about how she's so lame and such a baby. They're in such a hurry to hit the trail that no one checks Rachel's saddle. A dog runs out in the middle of the trail, her horse rears up, and she falls off and lands on her head. Part One: The Following February It's been a few months and Melissa still isn't over what happened. She keeps having nightmares about that day, and she tells her mom that Josie blamed her for what happened. Not only do they rarely talk now, but she's also dating Josie's ex-boyfriend Dave. Then we go over to the twins' house. Erica now gets stuck watching over Rachel, who h...

The Baby-Sitters Club #87: Stacey and the Bad Girls

Image
It's now summer for the 976 th time in Stoneybrook, and Stacey is a little sad because she's no longer friends with the BSC. Luckily, she now has Andi, one of Robert's friends. Unfortunately, Andi is about to take off for some family vacation. Stacey calls and asks her to come over and that she'll call the other girls. There's Sheila, Jacqui, Mia, and Heather. They all have fun, but one of the girls snoops in her room and finds a letter that Robert wrote to her jokingly calling her Toots. Since Stacey has the house to herself all day, the girls start coming over every day. They hang out, watch U4ME some new boy band, and eat a lot. Robert stops by one day after working at his painting job. Maureen comes home to find everyone lounging around the house, a plum stain on the wall from where one of the girls threw one at Robert, and food everywhere. After the girls leave, she demands that Stacey find a job. Stacey looks in the paper but all the jobs...

Sweet Valley Twins Super Chiller #3: The Carnival Ghost

Image
I have literally read this book at least six times to write a recap for it and never got around to it. There is something about the book that annoys me, so this might be a short one. The big carnival just came to town, and even though it's the day after Christmas, Jessica is already bored. She convinces their parents to give them a bigger allowance so they can do more at the carnival. Jess and Liz both go on opening day and decide to go through the haunted house. At the end, they can go through a graveyard or a vampire's room and decide to split up. Elizabeth swears that she hears someone whisper in her ear, and she exits through an open grave. She sees a girl in an old-fashioned white dress right before Jessica pops up. Jessica later meets Ms. Z, the fortuneteller. She gives her a bunch of advice and makes her think that she's the real deal. Jess brings back the Unicorns, and Lila acts like a little beyotch. She makes them spend all night at the g...
