Nancy's class is in the middle of a science fair. George's dad helped her create a mobile of the planets on a wood base. Jason, one of the boys in their class, steals the bubbles that Nancy and Bess used for their project and starts tossing it around the room with these boys Andrew and David. The bottle knocks into the mobile, and one of the planets breaks. Mrs. Reynolds, their teachers, tells George that she can fix it in the morning. When they get back the next day though, someone already fixed it. They left a note behind on paper with smiley faces on it, and Nancy finds a bottle of empty glue under the table. George tells them that she got a few other notes on the same paper and thought it was Bess because her family has the same paper. Nancy decides to investigate and find the culprit. This is basically a Choose Your Own Adventure Book but featuring Nancy and the Hardy Boys. They head to California to stay with the Blake family, who are friends of Frank and Joe's parents. Jill, their daughter, tells them that she saw someone steal something and run away and that the person kind of looked like their gardener. Nancy investigates the gardener, and the boys check out the chip. One ending has Nancy catch some robbers and lock them in the basement of the house until the cops arrive, while the boys find a silicone computer chip, spend the whole book trying to find who stole it, and finally learn that it's worthless. Another ending has Nancy find out that the gardener is innocent and saving the day because she's Nancy. As she and Jill float in the pool, Jill is super relieved that he's innocent. Ned is with the twins at the mall to see Santa at the Christmas Village when they run into all of their friends. He buys them all popsicles and lets them hang out before they meet Santa. While Jessica has a long list of things that she wants, Liz just hopes that the Super Snooper Club gets a new mystery. Ned then decides to visit his client, Mr. Fox, in his jewelry store to look for a gift for Alice. While they are looking at all the expensive jewelry, two guys come inside. One is a younger guy with dark hair, while the other is an older guy with white hair in a black suit with a red tie. Mr. Fox shows them some diamonds from his safe, gets distracted, and suddenly realizes that the diamonds are gone at the same time that the two guys take off. Nancy and the gang are all relaxing when George gets the news that she won an all expenses paid whitewater rafting trip for her and three of her closest friends. Bess really doesn't want to go because she assumes she'll die, but they manage to convince her that there might be some hot guys there. Since they have space for one more, Ned comes along. That makes sense because supposedly he and Nancy are having problems...again. The trip includes plane tickets and a rental car. When they get there though, there's no one waiting for them. She'll take one star off every time they do something bad, and whoever has the most stars at the end of the week is the winner. Jessica and Ellen both lose four stars the first day because they get caught whispering in class. Even though Lila was whispering too, the teacher never caught her.
