Ghosts of Fear Street #20: Spell of the Screaming Jokers (R.L. Stine)

Image
Brittany is Kristy from the BSC, while her best friend Louisa is like Stacey or Claudia. Louisa cares about fashion, hair, and makeup, and she wants her best friend to look better, which is why she keeps trying to “fix” her hair. Brittany is extremely unhappy because their principal volunteered them to go visit some new kid Max who is too sick to come to school but new in town. He picked them because he caught them petting a rat in the band room. Even though this kid Frankie brought the rat to school, they got in trouble too. Her little brother Jimmy then runs in and does a card trick, which is his favorite thing in the world. Brittany, Louisa, and Frankie head over to Max's house, which is on Fear Street. Frankie suggests they cut through the yard of Mrs. Marder, an older woman everyone calls Mrs. Murder. Brittany tells them that she cursed a girl named Gina. Gina went in her yard and was never seen again. The older lady also has a ton of black cats hanging around. ...

Fear Street: Night Games (R.L. Stine)

Image
Diane is hanging out with her boyfriend Lenny, best friend Cassie, and Cassie's boyfriend Jordan when they come across the house of their math teacher. Mr. Crowell is the least liked teacher in Fear Street. After complaining about him for a bit, they move on and see a dark figure climbing out of a window. Though they think it's a burglar, it's actually Diane's old friend Spencer. Spencer tells them that he abruptly left town because his dad lost his job and his grandmother got sick so they moved to Washington. They came back recently, but his parents put him in private school. He doesn't explain why he never called Diane who was supposedly his best friend. Spencer tells them that he likes doing something he calls Night Games and wants them to play with him. It really just involves him sneaking up on a couple making out and yelling at them. Lame. Lenny is goofing off in math class when Mr. Crowell goes off on him. I think we're supposed to feel b...

Sweet Valley Twins #81: Robbery at the Mall

Image
Maria just got a video camera after her dad upgraded to a new model. Even though she has no experience using a camera, she agrees to tape the Boosters doing a new routine at the opening of the mall's food court. Elizabeth comes over to give her some advice and show her what to do. The next day, they arrive at the mall and start shooting. Just as Jessica goes to jump on the top of the pyramid, there's a loud noise and some shouts. Someone broke into the jewelry store and stole some money. Though Elizabeth wants to investigate, Ned and Alice finally grow a pair. They tell her to stay out of it and let the police handle the robbery. When the Boosters get together to look at the video, they find out that Maria had no clue what she was doing. The whole video is out of focus or doesn't show the Boosters at all. They all make fun of her, which somehow leads to them fighting among themselves. Jessica makes a comment about how she's the best and the only one wort...

They have to go to the grave of Madeline Templeton and then go to a bunch of places associated with her life before the path opens up. When they get to the last spot, they find Bryce's backpack left behind. It's full of random gear, but they get distracted when the path opens. Cindy agrees to wait behind while the others follow it. They wind up in a little town that looks just like their hometown but is much brighter and happier. The food tastes better and is free, people ...

The Babysitters Club Mysteries #15: Kristy and the Vampires

Image
There's some television movie called Little Vampires shooting in Stoneybrook, so you know that means Derek is coming back to town. He actually isn't the star this time, but that doesn't mean he isn't super popular. The Masters call to hire a sitter to stick with him on set, and Kristy is available. They also hire Claudia to watch over Todd since he has a small role in the movie. It turns out that Derek shot up a few inches since the last time he was in town and isn't sure how to use his new body. He keeps tripping over his feet and drops a very expensive Tiffany lamp that shatters. Kristy later finds a threatening note in his trailer, someone switches breakaway glass with real glass for a stunt he had planned, and someone sets up his stunt double to fall really bad. Kristy and the BSC quickly put together a list of suspects. Carson Fraser: Carson is the star of some super popular surfing television show, but Kristy thinks he's conceited an...

Sweet Valley Kids #5: Jessica's Cat Trick

Image
Jessica and Elizabeth find a lost cat outside one day, but because Steven and Ned have allergies, they hide the cat in their closet. Both twins take turns distracting Alice so they can sneak cans of tuna and glasses of milk upstairs. Since the cat has gray fur, they decide to name her Misty. It doesn't take long before they tell all their friends and their friends tell other people. Caroline shows up one morning and begs to see the cat. The twins aren't too thrilled because they worry she'll tell her parents and get them in trouble. Caroline comes to the rescue though when the cat gets out of their room. She covers up the cat's meow noises, and when Alice thinks she smells tuna in the girls' room, Caroline says she has a tuna sandwich. After giving it some thought, they decide to ask Caroline if she wants to take Misty home. First though, she has to ask her parents because they already have two cats. That same night, the twins notice that Misty ...

The Baby-Sitters Club #131: The Fire at Mary Anne's House

Image
It's once again summer in Stoneybrook, which means that Mary Anne is just chilling and reading the latest issue of Teenzine while playing with Tigger. When she comes across a contest to find the country's best sitter, she thinks about why all the other girls should win. She then tells the club about it and gets all embarrassed when they suggest she enter. Even though the contest clearly says sitter singularly, Kristy decides that they should enter as a group. Charlotte “helps” them get testimonials from their charges, Mary Anne agrees to write the club history, and Kristy decided to do the “why I like to sit” essay portion. A few nights later, Mary Anne wakes in the middle of the night to Tigger freaking out in bed. She eventually realizes that the house is on fire. Mary Anne gets to the hallway, her dad helps her get outside, and Sharon is already there and has called for help. Firefighters arrive, but they quickly inform them that the house is pretty much toast. ...
